Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
